A Lifetime of Lung Health: World Lung Day 2026

Every breath we take depends on a pair of organs most of us rarely think about until something goes wrong. World Lung Day exists to change that. Observed every year on 25 September, it is a global campaign to raise awareness of lung health and the urgent need to reduce the burden of respiratory diseases. The Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) and its partners first launched the day in 2019 to draw attention to the growing global burden of respiratory illness.

This year’s theme is “A Lifetime of Lung Health.” FIRS is using it to highlight our shared responsibility to protect and promote lung health at every stage of life, from healthy lung development in childhood through adulthood and older age. The idea behind it is simple but powerful. Lung health is not fixed. It develops over a lifetime and is shaped by the choices we make and the conditions we face, from before birth into older adulthood.

The need for attention is clear. Diseases such as asthma, COPD, lung cancer, tuberculosis and pneumonia affect millions of people worldwide and place a heavy strain on families, healthcare systems and societies. Lung cancer alone claimed an estimated 1.8 million lives in 2022, and around 2.5 million people were diagnosed that year, according to the World Health Organization. Many of these conditions can be prevented or managed when they are caught early, which is why awareness matters so much.

The 2026 campaign calls for action on several fronts. It encourages people to reduce their exposure to tobacco smoke and air pollution, prevent respiratory infections, recognise symptoms early and get access to appropriate respiratory care. Advocates are also drawing attention to newer risks, urging action to protect young people’s lungs from tobacco, vaping and nicotine products.

All of these goals depend on skilled healthcare professionals. Early diagnosis depends on clinicians who can recognise subtle signs during an examination. Managing chronic conditions such as asthma and COPD depends on nurses and respiratory therapists who are confident with airway care, ventilation and patient education. In emergencies, outcomes often come down to how well a team has practised before the moment arrives. A lifetime of lung health for patients begins with a lifetime of learning for those who care for them.

How 3B Scientific Supports Lung Health Education

Protecting lung health across a lifetime takes more than awareness. It takes people who are ready to act when it matters, whether that means catching an abnormal breath sound during a routine check-up, explaining a COPD diagnosis to a worried patient, or adjusting a ventilator for a critically ill infant. At 3B Scientific, we believe better respiratory care starts with better training. Our simulators, trainers and anatomical models help students and clinicians build these skills at every stage of the care journey, from recognising the first signs of disease to managing the most critical cases. Here are some of the solutions that support respiratory education today.

SAM4 Auscultation Manikin

Accurate diagnosis often begins with a stethoscope. SAM4 is a fourth-generation, interactive half-body manikin that lets students practise auscultation with their own stethoscope. Its library includes 26 lung sounds alongside heart, heart-lung combination, bowel and bruit sounds. It works straight out of the box with a smartphone or tablet, so no laptop is needed.

PAT4 Pediatric Auscultation Manikin

Children’s lungs sound different from adults’, and learners need to know the difference. PAT4 simulates a child’s anatomy with 15 accurate auscultation sites and can be ready for training in under five minutes. Built-in lights on the front and back highlight the auscultation points to help build student confidence.

SAM4 Online Auscultation Software

SAM4 Online takes auscultation training beyond the skills lab. This app- and web-based platform supports immersive training anywhere, anytime. Learners listen to heart, lung, bowel and bruit sounds on a virtual male and female manikin, study at their own pace, and see the sounds in context through echocardiogram videos and real patient case studies.

COPD Bronchial Tissue Model

Understanding disease is just as important as detecting it. This model shows how bronchial tissue changes with COPD in four stages: normal tissue, abnormal mucus secretion with mucosal thickening, permanent damage, and the effect of medication. That makes it a clear, tangible tool for classrooms and patient conversations.

Aurora Respiratory Training Simulator

Aurora supports training in respiratory management, ventilator use and Advanced Life Support. Its Internal Simulated Lung is based on the ASL 5000 Breathing Simulator technology. Aurora works with nearly any mode of ventilation, maintains therapeutic PEEP levels and breathes spontaneously while being ventilated. During bag-valve-mask ventilation, it gives real-time feedback on tidal volume, airway pressure and respiratory rate.

RespiSim® Essential

Managing mechanical ventilation is one of the most demanding skills in critical care. RespiSim® Essential is an all-in-one ventilation training system from IngMar Medical, a 3B Scientific company. It combines the ASL 5000 Breathing Simulator with RespiSim Software to run structured, multiphase training scenarios. Educators can use it for high-fidelity ventilation management training in anesthesia, critical care, emergency medicine, pulmonology and respiratory care. Learners can practise everything from starting mechanical ventilation to weaning, lung recruitment, lung-protective ventilation, finding optimal PEEP and managing patient-ventilator synchrony.

ECMO Cannulation and Endovascular Procedures Training Platform

When the lungs can no longer do their job, ECMO can provide temporary support in severe cardiac and cardiopulmonary failure. This simulator’s transparent design lets teams watch procedures in real time, recognise complications and debrief immediately. It has integrated systemic and pulmonary circulation and is compatible with ECMO consoles.

ECMO NeoPeds Endovascular Procedures Training Platform

The NeoPeds simulator is designed for neonatal and pediatric care. It combines realistic anatomy, ultrasound imaging and adjustable hemodynamic parameters in a translucent structure. Its modular setup supports skill development, scenario-based simulation and team training for high-risk paediatric interventions.

Breathing Easier Together

World Lung Day is a reminder that we should not wait for illness to start thinking about our lungs. They need protection and care from childhood through older age. Cleaner air, early diagnosis and good access to treatment all play a part, but none of these goals can be reached without skilled, confident healthcare professionals. Every correctly identified breath sound, every well-managed ventilator setting and every successful ECMO cannulation starts with training. At 3B Scientific, we are committed to giving educators and clinicians the tools they need to learn, practise and improve, so that patients everywhere receive better respiratory care. This World Lung Day, we invite you to explore our respiratory training solutions and join us in supporting a lifetime of lung health for all.
